Zopa
Zopa has been around for 4 years and allows people with spare money to lend it to those who are looking to borrow money. It is an online money exchange and aims to offer a higher return for those lending money and a lower rate for those looking to borrow money as it is effectively removing the middlemen.
According to Zopa's website lenders have made returns of over 9% over the last 12 months which is very high given that the average UK bank savings account is paying less than 1% at the moment. However, lending money is always risky and an economic downturn like the one we are currently experiencing often leads to large numbers of people being unable to repay their debts. If this were to happen lenders could find it difficult to get their money back - even from people with a good credit history. On saying that Zopa lenders have experienced bad debts of only 0.18% to date.
There are a number of safety measures in place for lenders and these include every borrower being risk assessed, credit checked and identity checked. To reduce your risk your lendings are spread across a number of borrowers so that if you lend £500 your money is spread across at least 50 borrowers. Also if someone does miss a loan repayment collection agencies are used to recover the debts.
If you fancy making money by lending money then take a look at Zopa for more details.

Tax on extra income
However, remember that the first £6,035 of any income you make is tax free in the 2008-09 finanial year. Also if you incur any costs buying equipment such as a computer or stationery then these costs will be tax deductible as long as you have kept the receipts.
If you are earning less than £4,635 you can complete a CF10 from HMRC which may exempt you from having to pay Class 2 National Insurance contributions on your earnings.

Get paid to write reviews
Dooyoo allows people to write reviews about products they have bought. These reviews can then be used by other people who are looking at buying these products and are trying to do some research about how good the product is before the spend any money on buying it.
If you join dooyoo and write a review of more than 150 words you earn 500 dooyoo miles (equivalent to £0.50), a further 15 dooyoo miles (£0.015p) each time someone reads your review and 1,500 dooyoo miles (£1.50) if your review is a Crowned review. A Crowned review is a review that is especially good or useful.
Obviously the more reviews you write and the better they are then greater the amount of money you will make.
You can cash in your dooyoo miles for Amazon vouchers once you have 10,000 miles, or you can wait until you have 50,000 if you want cash. If you are feeling charitable then once you reach 5,000 dooyoo miles you can donate these to a chosen charity.
